Fake Owl

Even the center of Salt Lake City has some interesting birding opportunities.

Do you see this generator?

It’s covered in bird poop.  So to scare away the birds, management has installed a fake owl.  Do you see how effective it is?

Pigeons hang out all day in that air shaft!  Perhaps it’s nice and toasty.  (sorry for the graininess – I was taking pictures through a window).

The owl in the front part of the building is much more effective in scaring off birds.  Aren’t you terrified?

Salt Lake City has a pair of Peregrine Falcons that nest in the one of the Mormon buildings in Temple Square every year.  I’m really excited to see them.  Peregrine Falcons are very rare in California, so it will be a life bird for me.  There’s even a website with two webcams dedicated to the nesting birds.  Last year the eggs hatched in May.  In looking around for information, I came across this amazing picture.  I really hope to take a similar picture.

The plastic owl is pretty useless, but someone made a lot of money off of them because I see them everywhere lol.

Thanks for the peregrine cam link; I love watching them. For years, I ‘ve watched the ones on the Dunn Memorial bridge in NY – your camera link is completely new to me :) .
