Audrey is 20 years old. That is extremely old for a cockatiel. Most websites describe cockatiels as living 12-15 years, although the oldest known cockatiel lived until 35. Audrey, of course, will live forever.
As Audrey gets older, his balance gets worse and his grip has become weaker. We deal with this in several ways. First, I make sure that his nails are adequately trimmed. If Audrey’s back nails are even slightly long, he will curl them inward instead of using those nails to perch.
.
Second, we try to give him exercise. The best exercise is to put him on a finger and walk quickly across the room. The force makes Audrey feel like he’s almost flying so he spreads his wings for balance. I will also put him on my finger and move him up and down. I noticed a marked improvement in his grip after doing this regularly. A better grip means he won’t have trouble stretching on one foot like this (even if he is doing that back toe thing):
Lastly, as Audrey gets older he becomes increasingly uncomfortable with bright lights. It works out well that we moved to a house where the attic is converted into a bedroom because there are only a few windows. Audrey is completely happy living in a dimly lit room.

LOL @ “Audrey, of course, will live forever.”
Mordecai, too, has drunk from the cup of immortality.
Audrey is still one of the prettiest tiels I’ve ever seen.
Audrey will live forever.
Thanks mom!
His crest is unbelievably thick, tall and freaking amazing!
Long live Audrey!
It’s so encouraging to see a 20 year old doing well. I have one that is now 17 years old (and a 3 year). Your pictures are really cute.
Thanks Dina!
