At Farmington Bay I saw my first Black-Crowned Night Heron.

He was standing on a perch completely motionless.  I thought at the time that perhaps he was motionless because hoped that I thought he was part of the wooden perch.

But it turns out that night herons hunt by standing motionless and hunting amphibians.  So perhaps I should stop anthropomorphizing so much.

Such a beautiful, clear photo of these beautiful birds.

I have an odd tidbit about this guys. My honey saw two at a dumpster…. in Chinatown… in OAKLAND! Gag!!! We had a crappy cell phone photo and just couldn’t believe it. I’ll have to ask if they were standing motionless while hunting at the dumpster.

That is crazy! I would never expect to see a heron dumpster diving. Now I have a very funny picture in my head of a heron standing motionless and then stabbing at a hot dog. :-)

I’ve seen night herons at city parks, campgrounds, and other non-wild places. I guess they’re good at adapting to all kinds of environments, which bodes well for their survival!

Wow, I’m so surprised! I need to get out more.
