It’s been awhile since I discussed Black-Billed Magpies.
I’ve gotten my wish to live among magpie and it’s great. There aren’t a lot in my yard, but I always see them in the Red Butte Gardens. Just look in the tops of trees. Check out his tail, it’s so long!
Have you ever heard of Ian Tyson? He’s a country singer. Now, I’m not much of a country fan (unless you count Johnny Cash) but he made a song called “Magpie” that is awesome. Download it now! It starts out with the sound that a magpie makes, so when I hear magpies I now think of Ian Tyson.
The birds in the picture above look very conspiratorial but in fact they were picking at the white spot in the middle. I love the picture below because one magpie is in focus and the other isn’t. Watch out for ghost magpie, oooo! He’s watching you.
I wondered if the magpie below was a juvenile. He was calling a lot, such pitiful cries.
Checkout his pretty feathers.

Striking! I’ve never seen a black bill magpie in person.
They’re so cool. Like crows with white splotches and just as much attitude.
Just beautiful! I love them – have to see some next time we get out there…
They’re extremely common in the higher altitudes, so I guarantee that I can find you one.
