Today we headed out to the Strawberry Reservoir in the Uinta National Forest. It’s a nice time to visit because the mountains look like this:
The fields look like this:
And this:
The best part about Strawberry Reservoir? Baby grebes!!!
The parents were very watchful. When they saw me they would alert the others by making noises that sound like scratching a record player. It’s important to be watchful because the babies were unbelievably loud. As soon as I got out of the car, I could hear them.
“Mom, I am so hungry. Why won’t you feed me?!”
“How can you just float there?”
When the babies move, they stretch their necks out and down. It’s a very odd movement that the parents don’t copy.
I also got a nice shot of a grebe eating. Yum!

Isn’t it a bit late for them to be fuzzy? They are so cute and soon will be wintering with me
!
There must have been a late clutch. Most of the babies were in the juvenile stage where they’re the same size as the parent. I think there were only a couple little fuzzy ones, but of course they’re cuter so they got more screen time.
Strawberry Reservoir looks lovely despite motor boats. Wonderful pictures. And I love the grebes. Now I know what they look like. Thanks!
I took some very careful photos to avoid showing the motorboats.
But in all seriousness you hear them more than you see them.
