Young cockatiels love to chew things. The toy below had popsicle sticks between each ball. In one day, Trevor shredded each stick!
The crazy thing is, it was in his cage for weeks before he destroyed it. This teaches the fundamental lesson of giving toys to birds: you have to be patient. You have to give birds a variety of toys and see what they like. Trevor’s next toy is below.
This is referred to as a shreddable. There is stuff inside the cardboard box. So far Trevor is terrified!!! He hissed at it. So for now it stays on top of his cage. Then when he’s used to it I can put it inside the cage and come home to a chewed-through toy.
So true! A toy that I think is irresistible gets ignored for days, weeks, sometimes months. Then, lo and behold, it’s half gone in one day. Amazing!
Trevor still hisses when I hold the toy out in front of him, but I’m still optimistic.
Well, they have to be sure the new toy won’t eat ’em, you know! Mine are the same way — terror, hissing, ignoring, then total destruction.
Last night Trevor ate millet that was right next to the new toy. Progress!
