Bad Bird

So two nights ago I was taking pictures of the cockatiels for the Listerine post.

And it’s pretty hard to get the perfect picture because Trevor makes the other cockatiels run out of the way when he comes barreling through.  Although in this picture, he’s hiding behind the Listerine bottle and making the most adorable face so this picture comes close to being perfect.

But look at Conner’s expression in that picture (Conner is in the middle).  Do you see how he’s eyeing Audrey?  That’s because he’s a total pervert.  Check this out:

I stopped him immediately after I took the picture and realized what was happening.  If you look closely you can see Conner’s foot on Audrey’s back.  Now, I wouldn’t care if they both wanted to mate.  In fact, I’d be thrilled.  But Conner is trying to have some nonconsensual fun with a 22 year old bird.  I’m puzzled by why he doesn’t understand consent.  Conner is very clear about when I can and cannot play with him, kiss his chest, etc.  So I don’t get why he thinks it’s okay to hurt Audrey.  He loves Audrey more than anything!

My guess is that it’s partially mixed signals because Audrey flirts by bending his head down and shaking his wings.  To Conner it looks like an offer to be mounted.  To Audrey, he’s expressing his excitement over the Listerine bottle.  Sigh.  I really hope Conner eventually figures it out.  Trevor has tried the same trick with Conner (Conner can easily get away since they’re about the same size) so maybe Conner will someday have an epiphany.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Well, I haven’t had the same problem. I have two male cockatiels and Chipper is the hormonal one, but he never tries to mount Charlie. Maybe that’s because Charlie is a prude. If Charlie sees Chipper “mating” with Chipper’s beloved book, Charlie highly disapproves, will get upset and screech at Chipper, and then try to push Chipper off his book. I think they are all rather unique in working out these hormonal and relational issues!

Oh man, that’s hysterical! When Audrey uses his giraffe everyone else gets excited for him. They gather around the giraffe and sing.
