California Quails

It’s time for the annual checking on the quails for babies.  I made it over to Red Butte Garden in August.  Here’s the dad:

Here’s the mom:

Are you ready to coo?  Here are the babies!

Their feet are really big compared to the rest of their body.

There were five babies.  The dad was really good at watching to make sure that I didn’t hurt the babies.  Of course I wouldn’t hurt the babies, but I would scoop them up and try to raise them in the house.  I keep trying to convince Jon that we should raise a chicken in the house, but he’s not convinced that it’s a good idea.

Oooo, I love seeing quail! I haven’t seen one in years.

Love these guys. I can’t believe they let you look at them or their babies. The males stand guard here, usually perched in manzanita watching for anything suspect (and almost everything is suspect to him).

They are super secretive, but maybe they’re a lot more used to people in this area? These gardens are constantly filled with people. I captured pictures of the babies when the dad let the group across the street in front of a golf cart filled with people touring the gardens.
