Heermann’s Gull

I took a trip to San Francisco last week, and while I had plans to bird half the time I only made it out once.  Instead I discovered the joys of working in your hotel room past midnight.  Oh well, it was an awesome hotel room (Sir Francis Drake) and I really enjoyed eating at […]

American Pipit

Years ago I saw an American Pipit in Northern California.  I think it was in San Mateo.  I’m really surprised that I didn’t post about it because I think the shots were pretty decent.  But good pictures with that old lens aren’t as good as the 500mm lens pictures I took in the Uintas earlier […]

August Garden

When it comes tomatoes, the garden is a raging success.  The Sweet 100’s and the Sioux heirloom tomatoes are producing wonderfully.  The Hillbilly hasn’t made any tomatoes so far, which is surprising because last year it was the best tomato variety.  I’m also happy with the parsley and the kale.     I planted fennel, […]

Honeycreepers

I still have lots of pictures from Costa Rica.  I took over 5,000 pictures.  I saw two different honeycreepers.  This is the Green Honeycreeper.     He was always hiding out in the trees.  Amazingly, he’s a type of tanager.  It felt like 50% of the birds in Costa Rica were tanagers.  I also saw […]

Stonewall Makes Friends

My baby is growing up, I’m going to have to get another one.  He doesn’t even make begging noises anymore!     Trevor has about a foot of buffer that he wants Stonewall to maintain, but Conner lets him get pretty close.  Just look at Trevor eyeing Stonewall in this picture.  He’s so funny.   […]

White-crowned Sparrow

In the Uintas, I saw a very common bird in an unusual situation: the White-crowned Sparrow bathing.     Birds really take joy when they’re bathing.  I’m still taking Stonewall into the shower and he gets so excited!  This guy was equally excited to bathe right after a rainstorm.     My favorite pictures are […]

White-tailed Kite

On one of my trips to California, I got to see a White-tailed Kite at the Palo Alto Baylands.     I miss kites.  They make this haunting noise when they fly.     We’ve had sightings of the White-tailed Kite in Utah, but only as an accidental.  Accidental means out of normal range, like […]

When we visited New Hampshire I was struck by the abundance of squirrels.  In Utah I see them in the forests, but nowhere else.  In New Hampshire, I saw them at the Fells.  The New Hampshire chipmunks are Eastern Chipmunks and the Utah chipmunks are Least Chipmunks.  Eastern Chipmunks are known to be so abundant […]
