The Uintas had a lot of Dark-eyed Juncos.

This was the first time that I’ve seen a baby junco.  For awhile I thought he was a White-crowned Sparrow because they were in close proximity, but the coloring didn’t match.  I kept thinking about his brown back and pink beak and the ID clicked!

He’s still got the yellow edges of a baby beak – it’s called a gape flange.

I like the gray coloring better, but it was still cool to see and babies are less careful and let me get closer.

I never would have guessed baby dark eyed junco, ever – excellent detective work. I’d like to see what a juvenile looks like.

All your pictures are so beautiful and sharp!

Thanks! It took me about a week to come up with. :-) I’m so happy I got the lens.
