White-tailed Kite

On one of my trips to California, I got to see a White-tailed Kite at the Palo Alto Baylands.

I miss kites.  They make this haunting noise when they fly.

We’ve had sightings of the White-tailed Kite in Utah, but only as an accidental.  Accidental means out of normal range, like if a hurricane changed the wind patterns and pushed a species into a new area.  I need to figure out how to get a breeding population of kites here, because the world needs more kites.

    Excellent photos Liz!
I’m jealous; I’ve finally found a pair here, but they tend to be assholes about having their photo taken lol. The link to their sounds was a bit surprising. I don’t exactly know what I was expecting, but they sound softer than I imagined.
I agree, the world does need more kites.

Thanks! This was the first time I’d seen one that wasn’t hiding in a big bushy tree. Back near where we lived in Cali, it took me forever to get decent shots.

  3. What a beautiful bird. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

They’re wonderful to see. If you’re ever near San Francisco, I’ve seen the largest amount in Half Moon Bay.
