Trip to China

To reach Shenzhen, we had to fly from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles, from Los Angeles to Beijing, and from Beijing to Shenzhen.  The whole trip took 24.5 hours.

The trip from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles was fine.  But in Los Angeles we had an impossible time finding the right terminal.  Our flight to China was on Air China.  Our flight arrived in terminal two.  Los Angeles has nine terminals.  Everyone said to go to the TBIT terminal because it’s the international terminal.  We get to TBIT and find China Airlines.  Well, China Airlines is different from Air China.  China Airlines is a Taiwanese airline and it only goes to Taipei.  Air China is in terminal four, which by this point was all the way on the other side of the airport.  Finally, we got to the terminal and settled in.  But it took hours to get there.  From Los Angeles, the flight to Beijing took 15 hours.  I don’t sleep on airplanes, so by the time we got to Beijing I was tired!

Then we had to take another flight to Shenzhen, which lasted 3.5 hours.  Shenzhen is humid.  Checkout my hair!

I got sick the first day we got to China.  In fact, I’m still sick.  It’s been nearly a month.  Awesome, hunh?  From Shenzhen we flew to Chengdu.  On the airplane these three women got into a fight on the airplane.  They hit each other!  It was fascinating because in the United States they would have been hauled off the plane and arrested.  In China they were separated and police met them in Chengdu.

In Chengdu, our hotel came with a gas mask.

Helpful!  When it came time to fly home, we flew from Chengdu to Beijing.  We were supposed to fly from Beijing to Los Angeles, but they cancelled our flight and made us spend the night in Beijing.  At this point we were technically outside the country because it was an international flight, so we had to go back through customs and take buses to the airport.  The airport had no toilet paper.  But I was told to always travel with toilet paper in China, so we were okay!

Beijing is awful for me.  I was so sick in China and the pollution made my coughing so much worse.  Checkout this view from the airport.

There are airplanes in that pollution.  The day after we left they shut down the airport because the pollution was so thick airplanes couldn’t take off.  But at least if you’re fat, you can get a priority seat!

This is how I looked by the end of the trip.

That red spot under my nose is from using so many tissues.  So gross!  We got to Los Angeles, waited for the flight, the flight was delayed and we finally got home.  Now I don’t ever want to leave ever again.

OMG, you poor thing! I don’t know how you survived that because I’m not sure I could – the flight, the poison air. I think you look pretty damn good for all you went through, but it’s super crappy you are still sick. Get well!

Thanks! When they cancelled our flight in Beijing I didn’t say anything, I just tried to process it. And Jon was worried because he expected me to be ranting and raving. :-)

Good thing the birds were great. It is awful that you were sick. Was the gas mask to cope with the air pollution?

The gas mask says something about only being used in emergencies. But the air is so bad it already seems like an emergency to me.
