Tree Swallow Nest

Tree Swallows are so beautiful.  Their iridescent feathers look green or blue depending on the angle.

I assumed that they built mud nests like the Barn Swallows and Cliff Swallows, but it turns out that they’re cavity nesters.  This articles says they often nest in woodpecker cavities.  I found a swallow nest inside a cabin where we stayed last weekend.  I kept seeing a swallow flying around the cabin.  And then I found the opening.

And then I found a bird going through the hole.

I saw a juvenile poke his head out occasionally.  You can tell that he’s younger because they have more of a gray color before the tree comes in as juveniles.

Aw he does look hot. Tree swallows will nest in bluebird boxes too. I am surprised at how green the bird looks in your pictures. Thanks for sharing on facebook that you made a new post. I like the reminder.

Neat! I’m glad it wasn’t annoying. I don’t like people who constantly promote blog posts but these pics were so good I wanted everyone to see them.
