Chukar

We all know how much I love quails.  Jon even designed the landscape of our front lawn to encourage quails to nest.  Along the same lines, I’m a big fan of Chukars, even if they aren’t a native Utah species.

They’re hard to get good pictures of because they’re very skittish.  However, I suspect they’re also not very bright.  A friend of mine got a funny picture of three chukars on a rock each facing a different side and all three not seeing her and her camera.  The males are somewhat visible in the brush.  You’ll only find the females by looking for moving rocks.

Frequently I’ll have no idea that I’m close to them until I startle a group of them.

They like to bellow out these loud songs from their hiding places, the songs echoing through the canyon.

“Jon even designed the landscape of our front lawn to encourage quails to nest” – that might be one of the coolest things ever!!!!

I’ve never heard of a Chukar, I’m going to go Googling. Love your pictures of them; they sure blend in.

It’s pretty great. I’m hoping it will only be another year or two as the bushes get bigger. Our neighbors have quails living in their big bushes, so it’s not a pipe dream.
