Corners

Cockatiels are very ambitious birds.  They don’t spend a lot of time on lazy activities like sleeping.  Even preening looks like hard work to me because it takes them hours everyday to look beautiful.  But in addition to preening, the cockatiels have projects.  For awhile it was sitting on the outside corner of the cages [...]

Snuggling

Conner may not sing as much anymore, but he’s still willing to snuggle. The camera makes him a little shy, but Jon was able to catch him in his closed-eye pose.

Toys for Trevor

I try to supply a wide variety of toys for Trevor and Conner.  Conner doesn’t like them as much as he used to, but sometimes he chews the popsicle sticks.  Trevor prefers more variety. This toy is awesome because it has a box wrapped in tissue with shreddable material inside.  Unfortunately, Trevor doesn’t like to [...]

Conner

Conner is doing a lot better.  We can leave the room and he doesn’t go crazy. We do spend a lot more time with him at night, though, which helps.  They’re really happy when we’re in the room.  It means that the flock is complete and the birds can relax. Both birds are becoming more [...]

Rice Beard

In an attempt to make us healthier meals, Jon bought a rice cooker.  It’s a wonderful object for making rice and other grains, even oatmeal!  But most relevant to the birds, Jon made the birds a special mix of rice, lentils, quinoa and peas.  The birds loved it! I call it the rice beard.

Neediness

After Audrey died, Conner needed more affection.  He didn’t want either me or Jon to leave the room so we started spending a lot more time with Conner and Trevor after work.  Leaving for a week made the situation much worse.  I think Conner might have worried that we were never coming back. Now Conner [...]

Audrey Memorial

We had Audrey cremated last Friday.  Major Street Cremations in Salt Lake does pet cremations.  They were wonderful about everything: respectful and extremely accomodating.  We chose a wooden container because it resembles Audrey’s beloved orange juice containers. It has a section for a picture so I choose a picture of Audrey on his giraffe, looking [...]

Audrey Rufus Bird: 1988-2011

I’m sorry to have to say that Audrey died this morning.  We woke up at 6:30 am when he fell off his perch.  When I picked him up, he was already gone. He’s been part of my life since I was eight years old and I don’t know how to live without him.  I feel [...]

Cockatiel Fright

A couple of weeks ago, I was transporting the cockatiels from the shower to their cage when Conner freaked out.  He didn’t just startle; he lost his mind for about 20 minutes.  I tried to calm Conner down by giving him familiar things that he would like: whistling the Star Wars theme, bottles, boxes, even [...]

Occupy the Cage

Audrey has something that he would like to share with you about the Occupy Wall Street movement: “They keep me in a cage all day.  There are never enough blue bottles.  They won’t scratch my head for hours.  I am the 99%.”
