Christmas

Christmas is very hard for me this year.  My grandfather died in October 2010, my grandmother died three months later and Audrey died last month.  I have a very small family so it feel like everyone I love is leaving.  To compensate, I’ve been throwing myself into hosting Christmas and trying to make everything nice [...]

Denver Art Museum and Occupy Denver

Continuing with the last post, after being frustrated about the lack of art in the Denver Contemporary Art Museum, we headed to the Denver Art Museum.  This museum is fantastic and you should go if you’re ever close to Denver.  The museum is divided into two parts.  The north entrance has a very unique look: [...]

Denver Museum of Contemporary Art

Last weekend Jon and I went to Denver.  Jon wanted to go to a headphone convention and I wanted to visit a new city.  In particular, we really wanted to visit some art museums.  The Museum of Contemporary Art looked perfect because we both love contemporary art and they talk a good talk on their [...]

Thrift Store

Jon and I picked up these really cool wooden birds at a thrift store. The top of both of them swings open and there is storage space inside so I’m using them to store jewelry.  We had to introduce the cockatiels to the wooden birds of course. Audrey was all in.  He’ll get excited about [...]

The Madonna of Salt Lake City

There is a mural in Salt Lake City that has always caught my eye.  It’s a Madonna painted on the side of a boutique called Fice. Now there are several interesting things about this painting.  First, the painting is next to Gallenson’s paintball and gun store.  I don’t think I ever posted the pictures here, [...]

Mount Olivet Cemetery

Salt Lake City has an old cemetery that was started as a result of tension between Mormon and non-Mormon religions.  The non-Mormons are buried at Mount Olivet. Inside the cemetery, it looks like a different world.  But on the outskirts, it’s still a very urban area.  You can see the University of Utah stadium from [...]

Sundance

A few weeks ago Jon’s family was visiting and I said something about how there isn’t much to do in Utah.  But that’s a crazy statement.  There are tons of things to do in Utah.  For birding we have Farmington Bay, Antelope Island, the Uintas and many other places.  For hiking we have any area [...]

Timpanogos Caves

Last weekend Jon’s parents were visiting and so we took them up to the Timpanogos Caves.  The walk to the cave is a bit intense with an over 1,000 ft elevation gain in 1.5 miles, but it’s completely worth the hike.  In the picture below you can see the entrance to the cave. From the [...]

Salt Lake City

I discovered a fantastic blog called Sweet Juniper and I’ve been slowly making my way through the archives.  The author, Jim, and his wife moved to Detroit from San Francisco a few years ago with their daughter.  Jim has the most amazing series of pictures of abandoned houses in Detroit – he calls them feral [...]

Wheeler Farm

Last weekend Jon’s parents were in town so we took them to Wheeler Farm.  This place is great – it’s a farm in the middle of Murray, which is a pretty major town south of Salt Lake City.  The farm transports you to another time.   This house was built in 1895.  We took a [...]
