Although I haven’t had a lot of luck birding in Utah this winter, there is a pretty consistent supply of backyard birds that enjoy my feeders. I have great hopes for the backyard. I want to start gardening so I can grow my own vegetables, but I’m also planning the garden based on how I [...]

When I first started birding, all sparrows looked alike. From some angles it’s very hard to tell.
Pescadero State Beach Park

Today was a beautiful day in Pescadero. It was a bit cold, but not compared to the rest of the country. The beaches were mostly empty, though, so I guess the everyone believes that winter is approaching.

White-crowned Sparrows

It’s amazing how quickly things change during the Spring. I’ve been visiting the same forest area every 1-2 weeks and everything has been blossoming in the last few weeks. I’ve actually had trouble getting into the underbrush to photograph birds. Last weekend these two white-crowned sparrows were very willing to be photographed. One must have [...]
Spring

Spring has been coming for awhile here in Northern California. Audrey had his molt about a month ago. Conner is molting now. It looks like someone tried to kill him; there are feathers everywhere. Many of my friends have reported crazy hormonal behavior in their birds. Lots of screaming, biting, and territorial behavior. Conner and [...]
