Head smack. I didn’t proofread and my last sentence and it’s is all wrong- it should be “I’ve -always- taken horrible ones”. I’ve do not have one halfway decent killdeer picture. I really enjoyed yours!

Yeah, I love these photos so much. In addition to being a beautiful bird, they look extra amazing next to the icicles.

They look like they’re surfing when they do the display.

Janie, how interesting that they babies can move so quickly. Hopefully that makes up for their tendency to nest in such people-ridden places.

Kildeer are so fun to watch. We have several around every year, hanging out in the pasture or along the creek.
One year, we found a kildeer nest in the pasture, fortunately before the horses stepped on the nearly invisible eggs. We put up some plastic posts and electric wire to mark the spot and watched until the eggs hatched. The nestlings were gone within 24 hours.

Such an impressive display of distraction! Great pictures too – I just love that huge, crazy orange eye that seems placed a little high. They are always so unhappy to see people here that I’ve never taken horrible ones.

You really do! You don’t have to go to Utah to see them either. I saw them all the time in the Bay area. There’s even a birding ground called the Baylands in Palo Alto right among the law firms where they like to hang out.
